Antimicrobial Calcium Phosphates for Orthopedic Applications

Wednesday, June 14, 2023 @ 10:05 am - 10:20 am

antimcirobial resistance project

Surgical site infections and the formation of biofilm on implants can lead to patient discomfort, revision surgery and healthcare cost burdens. Finding innovative solutions that prevent or reduce antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and biofilm formation is of paramount importance to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.

Many orthopedic companies have prioritized commercializing solutions to combat AMR. CAM Bioceramics is designing and developing antimicrobial strategies based on calcium phosphates (CaPs) for hard and soft tissues. The product design and development is carried out as part of a DARTBAC project that received €9.8M in funding from the Dutch NWO. The project aims to research new technological solutions that prevent AMR. Antimicrobial materials are being designed by incorporating antimicrobial metal ions in CaPs. This session will review the latest results concerning CAM’s development.
